The health conscious world we find ourselves in today is a place where people are trying to get up and get fit. One of the best exercises that can be done for increasing upper body strength is the simple action of pulling your body up. There are generally many places that this can be done for free such as parks and other recreational areas.
However, installing a pull up bar in your home or apartment will be even better because now it is easily accessed any time you may like to use it. The simplest method for buying a pull up bar is to find a suitable length of metal rod at a hardware store and install it in your home in some fashion.
Beyond that simple method there are actual pull up machines, and easy access and installation pull up bar systems that people can buy and install on their door frames. One of the best pull up bars to go with is the free standing tower.
Free standing towers that are properly secured allow you to have a full range of motion without having to bend your knees. They also grant more room for doing optional abdominal exercises. Free standing pull up towers cost a little more, even if you build them yourself but they can take care of the space and durability requirements that your door frame will not allow for.
If you desire to purchase an easy system that can be attached quickly to a door then removed then the perfect pull up works pretty well if your door frame meets the requirements and can support your weight. You do not want to spend money on a pull up system that does not fit the space you have requested for it.
At any rate the most important thing is to get as much information about any specific system for pull up bars that you can. There are several good tactics for this.
Tactic One
This tactic requires you to go to a sporting goods store in person and search through the products they have their. Take the measurements for your door or the space you wish to put a tower in, whichever is applicable, when you go. Determine the needs of each particular product and ask questions to the store staff as they may have some knowledge in the area.
If any of the pull up bars are currently out on display and the store allows you to try them out then this would be a good time to give that a try.
Every product will have its strong and weak points. If you don't wish to purchase anything without further information then just view this as a scouting trip and return home to check the internet for positive and negative reviews of each pull up bar or tower you are considering. Use these, plus any information you gained from the store staff, to further weed down the many various products out on the market.
Tactic Two
This tactic involves building your own personally designed pull up bar. This can be done in two different styles. You can bolt it to the wall or between some rafters in your house. If bolting it down or finding a similar way to secure a simple bar is not to your liking you could build your own pull up bar tower.
To bolt a bar to the wall all that is required will be a solid wall or other place to secure the bar, two screw-in bar holders, and a bar. The bar holders can be anything you like that will be sturdy enough to hold the combined weight of you and your bar while performing strenuous exercise.
A bar holder needs to have a way to secure the bar to it so that it does not slip or roll as you use it. The best holders will have a metal loop on the end that is of a proper size for the far to fight tightly inside of. This will lessen slippage and the rest of that problem can be solved by using spring clamps that can be opened by squeezing them. These can be perfectly placed to hold a bar tight on either side of the holder. If the clamps do not meet your needs then it may be necessary to weld the bar in place to make it a perfectly tight set up.
A free standing tower will require a sturdy base that will not rock when you pull yourself up. Some people dig a pit, pour in concrete and install tower poles before welding on the bar. This is a very useful method for a permanent residence, however if you do not own your residence or plan to move any time in the future then using running poles as a steady base and another set as tower poles will work just as well. The best part is that if you use screw bolts to hold the poles together then you can remove those bolts later and take the tower down for transport.
