Pull ups are one of the best overall exercises for increasing strength. They work the lats, upper back, arms, shoulders and even the abs. It is not hard to learn how to do a pull up. Builidng your number of repetitions will require a greater amount of strength. And the best way of to increase pull up strength is to do them regularly.
Start out by grabbing the bar with an overhand grip. Grab the pull up bar about shoulder-width apart. You do not want to go too wide on the grip. This will put too much stress on your shoulder and rotator cuff. A narrower grip will take the emphasis off the lats and place it more on the arms.
Take a deep breath, then exhale as you pull yourself up so that your chin is slightly above the bar. Inhale as you lower your weight. Make sure you get a good stretch at the bottom before pulling yourself back up. Do not swing your legs or jerk your body to pull yourself up. Pull ups should be done in a smooth up-and-down manner.
Do as many repetitions as you can without cheating. Rest and complete 2-3 more sets.
You can also use an underhand grip which uses the biceps more. Most people can perform more repetitions with this type of grip. Your hands should be a little closer together for this movement to get better leverage.
The movement is performed in similar fashion. Always iexhale when you’re lifting yourself and inhale while you’re lower your body back down.
You can also do pull ups with the assisted machine. This can provide more leverage for you and give you more time to build up the necessary strength for a regular pull up. Over time, you will rely less on the chin up bar and more on your upper body strength.
Pullups should only be performed twice per week. If you lift weights, you can do them on days that you do back. You can do a couple sets in lieu of lat pull downs, or do them instead.
Be careful if you have not done pull ups for awhile. The muscles tighten with age. You can easily injure yourself with a sudden stress on your back or shoulder.
