One of the biggest misconceptions is the meaning of the word "diet." For most, the word conjures up images of minuscule portions, salad and grapefruit. This is not the way for one to go into a plan for weight loss and be successful. Your diet, quite simply, is what you eat and how much - and this needs only to be altered slightly to start seeing weight come off.
The first thing that should be looked at is the quality of the foods eaten. Obviously, weight loss can not be expected if the diet is based upon fried foods and pastries. Does that mean that they can never be eaten? Absolutely not! Moderation is key and keeping track of calories, both the intake and expenditure, is the lock to the whole thing! Something simple, like replacing some of the processed foods that are consumed with fresh fruits and vegetables will make a world of difference! Keep an apple handy for when the next "munchy attack" sneaks up on you. Celery or carrot sticks also work very well. If there is a day you know that you are going to have a heavy dinner, keep other meals on the lighter side and stick to foods that you believe are of a higher quality.
Everyone knows that drinking water is vital to good health, but it is a huge boost to weight loss and fitness. Water tends to flush away toxins that build up in the body and will reduce the body swelling that comes with water retention. Some people have even reported that by simply increasing their water intake every day, the size of their belly had decreased. Water is vital for muscle growth and for the muscles to work properly. If you replace one soda or sugary beverage per day with water, you will be on your way to better health and weight loss.
The last thing that someone can do to get in shape without going on a diet is to increase their activity level. This does not mean that you need to go to the gym for an hour per day, five times per week. Increasing your activity level can be as simple as doing twenty jumping jacks when in the restroom. It can be using the stairs instead of the elevator. Something as small as parking in the back of the lot and walking to your building will add up over time. Exercising in ten minute increments, three times per day, can be just as beneficial as getting in a thirty minute workout and may be easier to fit into your schedule.
There it is - simple ways to start getting in shape without going on a restrictive diet. Move more, choose the fuel you put into your body more wisely and be sure to get some water in every day. One more little thing to add...make sure you get enough rest every day. Do these simple things and you'll see your fitness level increase in no time!
