Eager to keep in shape but don’t relish the hassle of driving and traffic to make it to the local gym? If you have a grassy spot sitting empty in your backyard, having your own personal exercise yard is as easy as constructing outdoor pull up bars.
The two poles and the cross pole that comprise the outdoor pull up bars may look simple, but this easy to construct unit allows you to perform wide grip pull ups, side to side pull ups, and muscle ups without any additional equipment. If you hang ropes or rings from the crossbar, your workout can expand to include ring dips, ring push ups, and workouts that benefit your back and spine.
All the exercises performed on an outdoor pull up bar can strengthen and tighten your core muscles. And the average $75 in materials it costs to construct this unit will provide years of service rather than just one or two month’s membership at the health club.
Here’s your shopping list for the local home improvement or hardware store: two wooden beams (8 feet long), one iron pipe (5 feet long), four bags (50 lb. each) quick drying cement, shovel, drill bit, anti-rust outdoor paint, a level, one quik tube (4 feet long) and a roll of heavy-duty string.
At your appointed site, dig two holes 2-feet in diameter about 2 feet deep into the ground and spaced 4 feet apart. Cut your quik tube into two pieces and put one piece inside each dug hole.
Mix up your concrete with water as directed on the bag, put the end of one of the wooden beams standing upright into the hole on the left side and fill with concrete. Secure the beam with string to keep it level and do the same thing with the beam in the hole on the right hand side.
Let the concrete cure for two to three days. While the concrete is curing, paint your iron bar to protect it from rust and weathering and let that dry.
When ready to put the iron crossbar in place, use your drill bit to make a hole in each beam to fit the bar snugly inside. Here’s where your level comes in handy to make sure that your crossbar is positioned level to the ground. Secure each end of the iron bar to the wooden beam with a screw. Your outdoor pull up bars are ready for action.
