Before we talk about the pull up bar, let's talk about the story of me, pull up bars, and this website.
About a year ago, I began the process of starting a network of websites. I build websites (like this one!) for a living. Anyway, what began was a good six-months where the amount of exercise I got every single day was about the same... none at all.
I was already thin, but not in the good way. In the "I can barely carry this heavy piece of paper" way. I hated it, but was incredibly busy, so it just naturally happened. After the six-months of working on websites and sitting in a chair day in and out, it wasn't getting better.
That's when I began researching pull up bars. And that's what this page (and this website) are about. Explaining the basics of the pull up bars.
What is a Pull Up Bar?
A pull up bar is basically a bar that is mounted on something in order to give you the ability to do a "pull up." A pull up is when you grab hold of something with your arms, and do a pulling gesture until you lift your body off the ground. This exercise emphasizes your back, chest and bicep muscles, and is extremely popular do to the efficiency of the exercise.
There are a ton of different types of pull up bars, with the most popular being the doorway pullup bar. The door pull up bar is one of the most famous given that it's cheap and you can buy one online. As a matter of fact, that's where I bought my original chin-up bar -- the Internet.
What is the Purpose of a Pullup Bar?
The purpose of the pull up bar isn't to give you a full-body workout, but to give you an upper-body workout. In other words, it exercises your chest, arms, and upper back/shoulders. This where the entire exercise is oriented.
Also importantly, the workout isn't a long one. It only takes a minute or so to do the full pull up work out. That's one of the reasons I purchased the pull up bar, and I know for a fact that's why several of my friends did it as well.
It's quicker than most workouts, it's more fun, and it's just better, in general. You can do a quick workout after watching TV. A trick I use is to do 10 pullups before leaving my room or entering. That ends up being quite a lot after a while. It really does work.
Pull Up Bar or Chin Up Bar?
A chinup bar is the same thing as a pullup bar, to be honest. The only difference is in how you use the bar. A pull up is where you grab the bar with your palms facing outward. A chin up is where you grab the bar with the palms facing inward -- a chinup emphasizes your biceps whereas a pull up emphasizes your shoulders and back muscles.
That's the biggest difference between the two workouts. I prefer using both, mixing both. I typically do 5 of one and then 5 of the other.
Here's How to Get One
If you're really interested in getting a pull up bar so you can start working out your arms and shoulders and back, then just go buy one on Amazon. No, seriously. Don't get up till you buy one. It's that simple.
