Working out at home has become a very popular health concept in the last few years. People that find they do not have the time to go to a gym, or the emotional strength related to poor body image that would allow them to suffer such places, are finding inventive ways and equipment that they can use to work out from home more effectively. One of the best exercises around for the upper body and abdominal areas involves the use of a pull up bar, also known as a chin up bar.
There are many types of pull up bar in existence but they all come in three specific varieties. These varieties are removable door fame pull up bars, permanently attached pull up bars, and free-standing tower pull up bars.
Removable Doorway Frame Pull Up Bars
This style of exercise equipment is designed to fit over and around a door frame and it is held in place by the weight of the one using it. These can vary slightly in appearance but generally resemble something like a truck’s deer guard or a bike rack. They are usually constructed with a curved set of bars that are pressed against the wall above a door frame by the weight of your body when doing pull ups.
There are several brands of these removable doorway pull up bars such as Beach Body’s P90X system which also comes with a DVD and exercise guide. The Door Gym, a popular and lower budget model, and the Universal Door Mount Pull-up Bar, a more expensive model that has many different mounting styles and is welded together for maximum strength and durability, are both popular models as well.
The best thing about purchasing a removable door frame pull up bar is that it is in fact removable. You can use it at will then take it down and store it. This allows for maximum user satisfaction even if it does come with one downside. You must make certain to use a door frame that is sturdy enough to carry the weight of the bar and the one using it. The door frame must also be in a length that the bar will fit. These length specifications will vary by the manufacturer of the bar and they will answer any questions regarding this usually.
Permanently Attached Pull Up Bars
Permanently attached pull up bars are a version that require them to be bolted to either a door frame or some kind of open area with two parallel poles. These can be self created, such as attached mounting brackets to a door frame and a simple bar. There are also popular permanently attached systems that can be installed in your home or personal home gym.
The most popular of these systems are the Altus Athletic ADCUB Deluxe Chin Up Bar, the GoFit Chin-Up Bar, and Everlast offers a few other models that have similar capacity. The general rule of thumb for the manufacture of these bars is that they include padded grips and two sets of attaching bolts and mounts. This allows for variable grips and in the case of those that have extra mounts the bar can be installed for use in more than one door, preferably one with a different sized door space so that you can get both wide hand and close hand grips.
The most often cited reason individuals will go with cheap pull up bars is financial. These bars are a great deal cheaper than most removable bar systems and they still perform the same function. To further lessen the cost these are quite easy to make yourself and all it requires is a few bolts, some mounting brackets, and a bar that you can tape up for personal use.
Free-Standing Tower Pull Up Bars
Free-standing tower pull up bars are generally used in outdoor settings and offer one thing that neither of the door frame oriented types mentioned previously have. A free-standing tower will usually have far more room to move around and if appropriately sized it will not require the exerciser to lift their legs.
These pull up towers are the kind that most people see athletes, the military, and some weight rooms or gyms using. They are simple to construct and are an easy addition to any outdoor area. Those who have a home with enough space can make them indoors as well, but an outdoor or garage area would be the perfect place to put this.
The best feature of a free-standing tower is the space factor. These can allow for a much wider range of motion and let you work your abdominal area better due to the free space.
There are some systems on the market you might consider such as the mechanical ones that involve weight assistance and usually include a dip bar. These are excellent and can help someone who does not have much upper body strength develop the ability to do pull ups slowly over time.
Non-mechanical versions either require them to be cemented to the ground or runners on the bottom to balance the bar so that it doesn’t turn over with you as you pull up. This type of pull up bar tower can be built easily using a few pipes and a welder, or some logs, a metal pipe, a set of hole diggers, some wood screws with washers, a drill, and a bag of cement.
If you simply wish to build it out of fitted pipes then attach sturdy runner pipes at the bottom to balance the poles and make certain it is installed on level ground.
